Kgomotso Pooe had a vision of bringing quad bikes to Soweto and turned a patch of grass at a derelict power station into what is today just part of his growing tourism empire. In May 2013, Pooe founded SoWeToo Hop-On-Hop-Off Tours, along with City Sightseeing Johannesburg, and now has three minibuses seating 15 passengers each, plus a guide and driver. Today the tours serve more than 800 tourists a month. But the 35-year-old former advertising executive knew that if he wanted to be a serious player in South Africa’s tourism industry he needed to have a base in Cape Town, so he decided to expand to the Mother City, and LaGuGu Hop-On-Hop-Off Township Tours was born. Pooe’s first official job was in tourism, as a flight attendant for the national carrier. Special awards he has won include 2013 Aspiring Entrepreneur of the Year at the Gauteng Lilizela Tourism Awards, 2015 Young South African of the Year at ANN7, 2016 Youth Entrepreneur at Township Entrepreneur, 2016 Township Tourism at Township Entrepreneur Awards, and 2017 Vision 2030 SMME Award.
